J.O. Bass spurs,
gal leg, #198, pristine
condition, completely
original and all
mountings intact.
Maker's mark on right
spur as usual "MADE BY
J.O.BASS. TULIA. TEX.
NO.198" This fantastic
rare pair of Texas' most
desirable maker is as
shown in Bass' own
catalog (Photos 2b & 2c)
from the very early
period of Tulia
production just after
Bass moved there from
Quitaque about 1902-1905
(House, et al 2003:28).
See my books listed for
more information on
Bass, the premier Texas
maker. This pair from
the family of original
purchaser, have letter
of provenance. Quitaque
production went up to
about serial number 160,
so these are very early
and rare, especially in
the gal leg design with
silver side mountings,
rowel pin covers, two
top inlaid bars and
silver buttons. The
iron heel band itself is
scalloped as typical in
early Bass production,
with typical swinging
buttons, original
leather straps. This is
as good as it gets with
Bass, serious inquiries
only, POR. |

Rare "K & C" marked
spurs, probably made by
Kelly Bros. These
are the deluxe version
with the pearl buttons
and in mountings.
Standard features
elsewhere. For exactly
who "K & C" are, see my
book,
Bit & Spur Makers In The
Texas Tradition,
pages 158-161.
These are lightly
cleaned, but hardly
used, edges & engraving
sharp, nothing missing,
no abuse. This is the
Kelly Bros. Style 58, in
Catalog 17 (about 1919)
made pretty early,
probably during the
1920's. Big 2" engraved
rowels, 7 pt., with
engraving sharp on
mountings, 1" heel
band and original
straps. $6500 |

Bianchi Style 1,
a little pitted, but OK
showing typical use in
south Texas, from near
Three Rivers. Someone
has re-pinned the
original Bianchi rowels
and put the pin through
the silver coin rowel
cover unfortunately, but
not a big thing, can be
redone if owner
desires, Nice big 1"
diamteter Mexican silver
coins as well as
standard Bianchi double
mountings. Bianchi used
higher grade silver than
almost any maker; see my
book on the subject on
this website,
Hand Forged For Texas
Cowboys.
Desirable black iron
from early production,
marked "Hand Forged",
visible inside heel band
on both spurs, though
some letters missing
from wear. $4500 |

Bianchi Style 3 -
the famous 20 coin
style! The "Holy Grail"
of south Texas spurs,
these fabulous heavy 1"
heel band spurs have
the optional silver
shanks which listed in
Joe Bianchi's Catalog G
at an additional $1
cost. This style was
offered in 4 weights, I
think this is the
next-to-heaviest, or
maybe the "extra heavy'
he describes. He also
offered the button
monogram which is "JG"
here on the insiide
buttons for a free
upgrade. These spurs
are in unbelievable
unworn condition, with
the eagles clearly
visible unworn on all 20
coins, unlike most. It
is my opinion, based on
my research, that later
Bianchi domed these coin
mountings and buffed off
the Mexican eagle. The
early "J. BIANCHI,
VICTORIA, TEX." inside
heel band marking
verifies this. Rowels
are 12 pt. as shown in
my book on page 95;
guaranteed 100% original
with no damage, replaced
mountings, nothing, and
this is rare, lemme tell
you. I probably have
handled more Bianchi
spurs than anyone, spent
11 years researching
book and am still
learning, but this is
the best of the best.
These unbelievable spurs
have a fascinating
provenance which i will
disclose to the buyer.
They were found on the
original old rotten
boots and still sport
their original
leathers! The Holy
Grail of south Texas
spurs, POR. |
